What is PM Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)?
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a flagship scheme launched by the Government of India to provide free LPG gas connections to women from below poverty line (BPL) households. The aim is to replace traditional cooking fuels with clean and safe LPG.
Each eligible beneficiary receives financial assistance for a new LPG connection, including the first refill and stove.
How to Apply for PMUY – Step-by-Step Guide
1. Collect Required Documents
- Aadhaar Card of applicant and adult family members
- Ration Card or BPL certificate
- Bank account details (preferably Aadhaar-linked)
- Passport-size photo
2. Visit Nearest LPG Distributor
Go to the nearest LPG distributor of HP Gas, Bharat Gas, or Indane. Ask for the PMUY application form.
3. Submit the Application Form
- Fill in your name, address, Aadhaar, bank details, and family information.
- Attach required documents and submit the form to the distributor.
- Your details will be verified and a connection issued if eligible.
4. Connection Installation
If approved, you will receive an LPG cylinder, regulator, and stove. The first refill is usually free under the scheme.
Eligibility Criteria for PM Ujjwala Yojana
- The applicant must be a woman above 18 years of age.
- The household must be listed under the SECC 2011 BPL data or hold a ration card under the Antyodaya or BPL category.
- No existing LPG connection in the household.
SC/ST households, forest dwellers, Most Backward Classes, and others are also included under extended PMUY 2.0 eligibility.

Is online application available?
Currently, application is primarily offline through LPG distributors, though forms and eligibility check may be available at pmuy.gov.in.
How long does approval take?

Can men apply for PMUY?
No. Only women applicants are eligible for the scheme, and the connection must be in the woman’s name.
